Jenny Lewis- The  Big Guns (live in L.A. 2006)

This live concert bootleg is what got me on board the JL solo bandwagon, it’s perfectly folky, with the right atmosphere of country to easily settle into my wheelhouse. I can cook to this, I can sit out in my back yard sipping a bourbon to this. Music doesn’t always have to be challenging to make you love it, sometimes going bare bones is the way to win people over.

Heartless Bastards- Runnin

While I’m less the enthused by seeing this band live (I was told it wasn’t that great by a friend whose opinion I value) I can say I definitely see the appeal this PJ Harvey lite music has for a certain section of the female population, seriously ladies you can be angry, we get it.

Matthew & the Arrogant Sea- …and this is where the story ends

The bookend song on their album, is strangely fitting in how it feels slightly out of place with it’s pronounced guitar twang at the lead as opposed to most of the other compositions on the album. The build at the end though echoes most of the album, and serves as a fitting ending for what was in my opinion one of the best full lengths I heard last year.

Evangelicals- Skeleton Man

I woke this morning to find an email from our Art director Blaire that read simply “OMG. I love Evangelicals!” it made me laugh, and reminded me how much I loved this song last spring.

The Starlight Mints- Seventeen Devils

You know after hearing this fun little piece of indie pop, I can’t help feel that this show is going to be the best combination of bands in the area this week.

Ben Kweller- Ice, Ice Baby (live Robbie Van Winkle cover)

I was going to post Ben’s “Lollipop” cover from the Stubbs the Zombie soundtrack (try to find this, it had a bunch of fun covers), but his take on a fellow Dallas hit maker’s biggest jam was too much to pass up.
