To often I find myself coming under fire for my dismissive attitude towards what passes for hip hop these days, and as my usual defense I comment that as someone raised around R&B, Soul and Funk I cannot in good conscious recognize the bastardization of a once great art form. Now, that does not mean that I find everything terrible, I do have a love for riding at night in a packed car, as a driving beat pushes us further into the night. Anyway, you can find the zip here, the track list, and some sample tracks (with commentary) below.
Prince & The Revolution- Let’s Go Crazy
Danger Mouse v. Jay-z & The Beatles- 99 Problems/Helter Skelter
Ma$e- Feels So Good
Few songs make me more nostalgic then this brash trip into ego. Seriously this is terrible, and awesome at the same time, I wonder what Hype Williams is currently up to.
PZ featuring Ghostface & Grizzly Bear- RAGU
I have no idea where I got this track from, (most likely it’s a Hood Internet track) but it’s a rather amazing combination of two of my favorite things.
Ol’ Dirty Bastard- Shimmy Shimmy Ya
Lil’ Wayne- A Milli
This song annoys the fuck out of some people, maybe that’s why I like it.
Ghostface Killah- The Champ
Cadence Weapon- Sharks
The Notorious B.I.G.- Juicy
As a poor kid growing up in some pretty rough locals, I constantly found myself idolizing the intelligent swagger both Biggy and Pac brought to some of their more grounded songs. Of course I was 12 at the time.
RZA- You Can’t Stop Me Now
Pretty much the same reason as above, but 10 years later.
Public Enemy- Rebel Without A Pause
Tor/Sufjan Stevens featuring Brother Ali- Night zombies/Talkin My Shit
My cousin turned me on to the mix this track is from, it may be the best thing he’s ever done.
A Tribe Called Quest- Can I Kick It
Kanye West- Jesus Walks
Say what you want about Kanye (and Lord Knows I do) this song is lasting for all it’s faults.

I do find it odd how people who aren’t the biggest hip-hop fans have easily taken to Lil Wayne. I listen to a pretty good amount of rap and I still can’t stand him. Otherwise, though, good mix.

It just doesn’t feel like summer without some white girls.
