How about some free music?

We’re back, or I’m back whichever sounds better. Anyway the site is back up, and we’re going to round back into pre-computer breaking form next week. So this week inleu of rundowns, or music from people playing locally we’ll be offering up some music that I’ve personally rediscovered, along with spotlights on a couple choice shows. Thanks for sticking with us.

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah!- Five Easy Pieces

Lord has it ever become the critical du jour to heap scorn on these guys. It seems everyone who were so caught up in their 2006 debut, felt slightly embarrassed by the whole thing, and felt the need to take down the new popular guys despite the fact that the followup was enough of a departure from the original to merit consideration as a stand alone. Anyway, this song serves as  the closer to Some Loud Thunder, and perfectly captures what’s great about this band airy, catchy music, that manages to be memorable yet unobtrusive.

Grizzly Bear- Don’t Ask (Final Fantasy Remix)

Wanna make a hipster girl melt where she stands? Play this.

My Morning Jacket- Rocket Man (Elton John cover)

Back in the olden days Jim James and crew recorded a large amount of cover demos, and this one serves as a glance towards what he could/would do with his voice with him nearly pushing it to a break in spots. While the layered feel of the production serves as a glimpse to the approach the band would take on latter albums like Z.

Nic Armstrong & the Thieves- In your arms on my mind

Full on revisionist pop here, and it’s great.

Parata- Predator Piano

This is easily my favorite Parata song, it’s soaring, catchy, and is a direct descendant of Dario Argento collaborators Goblins, and Dallas trendsetters the pAper chAse. It’s like watching a Italian horror movie in 5 minutes of music.

Ryan Adams & the Cardinals- What Sin

I love and hate Ryan Adams, on one hand he does shit like crediting Parker Poesy on albums, and storming off stage, on the other he absolutely kills this song live on the old Henry Rollins show, while wearing a Batman shirt. I have no idea what to think about this guy.

Track a Tiger- Glad To be Scattered

It took me forever to figure out who did this song, I’ve thought it was everyone from The New Pornographers to the Dirty Projectors, turns out Chicago based band Track a Tiger has perfected the line between pop and twee, and specializes in firing out songs like this at a rather quick pace, you should be listening to these guys.

White Stripes- Jolene (Dolly Parton cover)

The day I got my El Camino I jumped in put the ipod on shuffle, and this came on. She’s been Jolene ever since.
