Sara Lov couldn’t have chosen a better name for this album than the title track, “Seasoned Eyes Were Beaming.” Her lyrics convey the maturity of someone that has been through so much, but can still see beauty and possibility in this world. It’s not too often that you encounter someone that can speak so eloquently about optimism without coming across as naive. “Now you’ve grown and you are logical / you forget that anything is possible / dismissing all who remind you you’re not true / so you cling to anything you can / it is all according to the new plan / I hope you’re lucky and something takes you back again.”
I’m such a sucker for the whole ’singer-songwriter’ genre anyways, but her arrangement of the songs, the variety of instruments, and her ability to build the tension using so many layers definitely takes the album past that classification, in my opinion. The music is a bit melancholic, but Sara Lov’s voice, and the instrumentation, are so sweet and almost delicate. I immediately wanted to listen to this album on a playlist with Emma Pollock and Trespassers William.
Upon first listen, I immediately fell in love with the simplicity of the song “Animals.” It starts with repetitive finger picking goodness on the guitar with a vocal style that sounds a little folky. As each line progresses, new instruments are added to build the intensity. Then, the vocals of Alex Church (of Sea Wolf) enter the song. they sing back and forth and then in unison. Their voices just blend so well. My heart just swells when they get to the line “You and I will never realize fleeting moments that pass by are all we ever have” and then cello enters the song. I’m such a sucker for strings.

Sara Lov is currently on the last leg of her 7 week tour with Sea Wolf and Port O’Brien. They playing at The Cavern in Dallas on October 27th, and honestly I’m excited to see how she translates some of the more complex layers of the album to her solo performance.
