Rundown: 11/30 to 12/6

I hope everyone enjoyed the holiday weekend. Mine consisted of a futile search for a ready-made gluten-free pie shell, frantically cooking a pescatarian/gluten-free (did I mention that I can’t eat gluten?) meal on an ever-dwindling supply of blood sugar, watching soccer with my dad and bad TV with my best friend, ignoring football games, and teetering endlessly between enjoying time with my family and simply tolerating them. Surprisingly, this time I felt that I didn’t stay long enough (if you’ve escaped from Wichita Falls or a similar hometown, you’ll understand what a big deal that is).

I’m not in school anymore, but apparently dead week is next week, which means finals week and graduation (if you’re lucky) are almost upon you college kids. This week, like just about every week in DFW, offers a plethora of shows. So be sure to take a study break (if you haven’t started studying yet I suggest you do, even though I rarely studied and graduated with honors) with at least one of these fine lineups.

P.S. I was going to rant about Google Wave and how I just got it but have no idea what to do with it, but I wanted to use my first Rundown wisely and I think I’ll leave the rants to Jaime for now. If anyone can tell me why I need Google Wave, I would appreciate it. Feel free to comment or email. Oh, you should also leave a comment if I forgot to mention any good or great shows this week.

Monday

Mi Son, Mi Son, Mi Son @ Dan’s Silverleaf

This is the last time to catch Robert Gomez and company’s tribute to Cuban music on a Monday night as Paul Slavens will return for his improv show next week.

Tuesday

Ryan Thomas Becker (album release) / The Beaten Sea @ J&J’s Pizza

Tomorrow, Daybowbow will be dedicated to the multi-talented RTB. His newest release is several years in the making and we couldn’t be more excited about it. If you attend the album release, you’ll be treated to the musical stylings of RTB and openers The Beaten Sea. You’ll also be invited to partake in a feast of toast and your choice of a variety of high-quality jams, jellies, preserves and other spreads (all selected by RTB himself). But judging from the album (a review of which I’ll post tomorrow), the music should be treat enough.

Wednesday

Metric @ Palladium Ballroom

dDV5 Release Show w/Slackbeat/Peopleodian/Kashioboy/DJ Nodad @ RGRS

Thursday

80s Night w/DJG @ Hailey’s

7th & Oak/Smart Foke/Brute Force @ RGRS (Free for 21 and up, $5 for under)

I commend Rubber Gloves for their decision to host more free shows and I think it will be successful. They’ve had some great lineups that I’ve kicked myself for missing, but judging from 7th & Oak’s material, this won’t be one of them. But what else are you going to do on a Thursday, aside from watch TV? They have great drink specials and I could be wrong about the show.

Friday

Bill Callahan (aka Smog)/Lights/Neal Morgan @ The Granada ($12 – $16)

I don’t use the term “genius” loosely, but Bill Callahan is a musical genius. I had the pleasure of seeing Callahan and Joanna Newsom play at Rubber Gloves’ free week a few years ago. It’s something you have to experience first-hand to truly understand. Lights (not to be confused with the nauseating, Myspace-endorsed LIGHTS) provide psychedelic pop with the right amount of twang to make them a nice opener for Callahan.

The Vic Chestnutt Band (featuring Guy Picciotto of Fugazi and members of Thee Silver Mount Zion)/Liz Durrett/San Soleil ($10 – $12)

For a fan of great country singer-songwriters, deciding between Bill Callahan and Vic Chestnutt is like Sophie’s Choice (but considerably less horrific). The shows are the same price, so for me I have a feeling it will come down to geography (do  I want to drive to Dallas or walk to Hailey’s?).

Daybowbow Presents: Emily Stoker/Baruch the Scribe/Young and Brave (with possible surprise guest!) @ The Handsome Kitten (FREE)

All three acts on this bill are phenomenal, and I’m not just saying that because it’s our show.

Saturday

Aesop Rock/Rob Sonic/DJ Big Wiz (plus Car Stereo Wars and DJ Sober) @ The Granada ($17)

Grooms / Nervous Curtains / Eyes, Wings & Many Other Things @ The Handsome Kitten

Spune Christmas w/ Telegraph Canyon / Monahans / Seryn / Doug Burr / Baruch the Scribe / Glen Farris / Fox & the Bird / Hand Combine / Spooky Folk @ Hailey’s ($5 – $7)

Every time I read the lineup for this show, I get ridiculously excited. It should be a fantastic kickoff to the Christmas season and a great precursor to all the studying that will be happening during the following week. Or a great distraction from studying early. Tickets are cheap (especially for a Spune show) and there will be free tacos, wassail and more. Don’t forget to wear your favorite (?) Christmas sweater, as there’s some sort of contest for that.

Sunday

KISS @ American Airlines Center

I’m going to be honest and admit that I had no idea KISS were still touring. I thought Gene Simmons was too busy making reality TV shows. It’s not that I necessarily dislike their music, but I wouldn’t call myself a “fan”. As a Chuck Klosterman follower, I’ve tried to reassess their music. I appreciate songs like “Rock and Roll All Nite”, “IWas Made for Loving You” and “God Gave Rock’N'Roll to You”  but once I to songs like ”Lick It Up”, I can’t take it. And I can think of countless bands who are cooler and more influential. If you are a fan and have $27.50 to spare ($126 if you want floor seats), you can still get tickets.
