(Note: Due to the sheer number of submissions we receive there is no way we can give each and every album the attention (and word count) they deserve, but we can devote time to at least one song from each. So we started this feature to give worthy bands, and their music a spot to shine. We hope this helps you discover new and exciting acts, and as always if you enjoy the music please make an attempt to support the artist by either attending a show, or buying a record.)

Since Jaime has left me in charge for the weekend, I am opening this thing with a little gripe session. I’m sick, with tonsillitis. My throat is sore, my tonsils are gross and swollen to twice their size. I’m weak and weary. But I can’t fall asleep because of my medication. As I write this, it’s almost 6 a.m. and I am currently wondering whether I will make it out of bed today.

But, dammit, there’s a Yo La Tengo show at The Granada tonight. And I’m going to it, even if my friends have to carry me there (or, you know, to and from the car … not all the way to Dallas).

Speaking of the Yo La Tengo show, Times New Viking, their Matador labelmates, will be opening. Jaime has expressed his disdain for the band, and I have expressed my thoughts to the contrary. But here’s a chance to listen for yourself. Here’s ”No Time, No Hope”, from their 2009 album Born Again Revisited. (And just as I did for Yo La Tengo, I’m giving you the video AND the mp3. You’re welcome.)

Verdict: This Columbus, OH, band kind of reminds me of another lo-fi/pop/badass outfit from Ohio that just happens to be one of my favorite groups of all time–GBV (Guided By Voices, if you’re not aware). There’s also a bit of the Breeders sound in there (in fact, they opened a few shows for The Breeders last August). Their music isn’t exactly mind-blowing or new, but I still like it (perhaps because it takes me back to the good parts of the 90s, which makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside). I’m looking forward to seeing them live.
